“Game of Thrones” Season 7: HBO Confirms Shorter Episode Count, Summer Premiere

“Game of Thrones” Season 7: HBO Confirms Shorter Episode Count, Summer PremiereHBO has confirmed that “Game of Thrones” Season 7 will consist of seven episodes, set to shoot later this summer. As Variety first reported, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are eyeing two shortened seasons to end the hit fantasy show, with Season 8 expected to be somewhere between 6 or 8 episodes. Production will be based in Northern Ireland, with additional portions filmed in Spain and Iceland. Season 7 is slated to premiere in summer 2017, later than its usual April start date.

“Now that winter has arrived on ‘Game of Thrones,’ executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing,” said Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming. “Instead of the show’s traditional spring debut, we’re moving the debut to summer to accommodate the shooting schedule.”

The later airdate means that Season 7 will likely miss the eligibility window for the 2017 Emmys and the show might have to wait until 2018 for glory, since the rules state that the bulk of a season’s episodes are required to have aired by May 31 to be considered.

“Game of Thrones” scored 23 Emmy nominations last week, leading the race with nods for stars Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey and first-time nominees Kit Harington and Maisie Williams, along with nominations for directing, writing and drama series, among others.

The show is executive produced by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield; co-executive producers are Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis, George R.R. Martin and Bryan Cogman, with Chris Newman, Greg Spence and Lisa McAtackney producing. Season 7 directors will include Mark Mylod, Jeremy Podeswa, Matt Shakman and Alan Taylor.

Dakota Johnson Looks “Fifty Shades” Hotter in Teeny Yellow Bikini on Set With Shirtless Jamie DornanFifty shades of hotness! Dakota Johnson showed off her svelte figure in a teeny yellow bikini while filming a scene for Fifty Shades Freed with her hunky, shirtless costar Jamie Dornan.

The 26-year-old actress and 34-year-old actor, who portray Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively, in the movie adaptations of EL James’ erotic romance novels, were spotted filming a honeymoon scene on a pebbled bay in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, France, on Monday, July 11.

Johnson looked gorgeous in a tiny string bikini, while Dornan showcased his enviable six-pack abs and muscular legs in thigh-length blue board shorts.

Pokémon-mania: Pokémon Go downloads top 15 million

Pokémon GoNot even Facebook is powerful enough to overcome Pokémon-mania.

The mobile game Pokémon Go topped 15 million downloads on Apple's App Store and Google Play, according to estimates from research firm SensorTower. Available since last week in the U.S., the game features characters called Pokémon players capture in the real world using a combination of GPS and augmented reality.

Pokémon Go is also among the most heavily used apps on a daily basis since its launch. According to iOS usage data from Monday, users spent an average of 33 minutes a day playing the game. By comparison, the average iOS user spent 22 minutes on Facebook and 18 minutes on Snapchat.

The stunning amount of time we're spending playing 'Pokémon Go'

What's interesting is when comparing Pokémon Go to other mobile games, it's actually behind in minutes. Their report finds users spent 43 minutes a day on mobile hit Candy Crush Saga, while action title Game of War clocked in at a whopping two hours.

However, neither game seems to have captured the national attention and generated such an obsession among players. The fascination has gone so far as to prompt warnings from police to use caution when playing, such as paying attention to surroundings and putting the phone down while you drive.

Box Office: “Secret Life of Pets” Dominating Weekend with $96 Million

Box Office: “Secret Life of Pets” Dominating Weekend with $96 MillionIllumination-Universal’s “The Secret Life of Pets” is dominating the U.S. box office with a $96 million opening weekend at 4,329 locations, estimates showed Saturday.

The animated comedy took in $38 million on its opening day Friday, five times higher than the first day of “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” with about $6.6 million at 2,982 sites.

“The Secret Life of Pets” will wind up dwarfing the weekend’s second-place finisher — either Disney/Pixar’s fourth weekend of “Finding Dory,” which has won three consecutive weekends and is playing at 3,871 venues, or Warner Bros.’ second weekend of “The Legend of Tarzan” at 3,591 sites. Both are heading for weekends of around $20 million.

Fox’s launch of Zac Efron’s “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” will finish fourth with about $18 million, followed by Universal/Blumhouse’s second frame of horror sequel “The Purge: Election Year”  with about $11 million at 2,821 sites and New Line-Universal’s fourth weekend of Dwayne Johnson-Kevin Hart comedy “Central Intelligence” with $8 million.

“Pets” will post the sixth-best opening of 2016 following “Captain America: Civil War,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Finding Dory,” “Deadpool” and “The Jungle Book” — all members of the elite group of 39 titles that have opened with more than $100 million domestically. It’s also a new opening weekend domestic record for an original animated film, topping the $90.4 million launch of “Inside Out” last summer.

“Pets,” which explores the lives of pets in Manhattan after their owners go to work, is performing well above recent forecasts, which placed it in the $70 million to $80 million range. It’s another strong entry in the animated sector, which has been a key contributor to keeping the overall business healthy this year with  “Dory,” Disney’s “Zootopia,” Sony’s “The Angry Birds Movie” and Fox’s “Kung Fu Panda 3.”

The “Pets” voice cast includes Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks. “Despicable Me” helmer Chris Renaud directs and Yarrow Cheney co-directs from a script by Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio and Brian Lynch.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri and longtime collaborator Janet Healy produced the movie — which carries a relatively modest $75 million price tag.

The raunchy “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” starring Efron, Adam DeVine, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza, is performing slightly better than forecasts. Efron’s R-rated comedy “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” opened in May with a $21.8 million weekend for Universal.

“Pets” is by far the biggest opening of the year for Universal, which has seen only middling performance in 2016 after a record-setting 2015. It’s also another success for Illumination, which opened “Minions” a year ago with $115 million on its way to a $336 million domestic total and $1.16 billion worldwide for Universal.

“Finding Dory” will finish the weekend with about $422 million as it surpasses Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” as the top 2016 domestic grosser and the 16th largest title of all time just behind “The Lion King” at $422.8 million. “Captain America: Civil War” is 20th on that list at $406 million.

Scarlett Johansson Named Hollywood’s Highest-Grossing Actress of All Time

Scarlett Johansson Named Hollywood’s Highest-Grossing Actress of All TimeThe actress’ movies, which include the “Avengers” franchise, have raked in a record-breaking $3.3 billion at the North American box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

The tracking site ranks Johansson 10th overall, beating out male stars like Robert De Niro, Matt Damon and action-movie favorites Bruce Willis and Liam Neeson.

This year alone, her films “The Jungle Book” and “Captain America: Civil War” have grossed $358.4 million and $404.3 million respectively at the domestic box office. Her highest grossing movie is “The Avengers,” which is also the fifth highest grossing movie of all time in the United States, with $623.4 million.

At 31, she is the youngest actor appearing in the top 10, but she’s also the only woman. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Johansson spoke about the Hollywood gender wage gap.

“There’s something icky about me having that conversation unless it applies to a greater whole,” Johansson told the magazine. “I am very fortunate, I make a really good living, and I’m proud to be an actress who’s making as much as many of my male peers at this stage… I think every woman has [been underpaid], but unless I’m addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious. It’s part of a larger conversation about feminism in general.”

The next highest grossing actress is Cameron Diaz, who comes in at the 19th spot on the list. Her movies, which include the highly successful “Shrek” franchise, have grossed $3 billion, not far behind Johansson.

Harrison Ford holds the top spot. His movies add up to $4.8 billion with the most recent “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as his most lucrative film.

Next up, Johansson will star in the anime adaptation of “Ghost in a Shell,” which has already received criticism for white-washed casting. She’ll also star in “Rock that Body.” Both are set for 2017.

Kate Winslet to Star in Woody Allen’s Next Film

Kate WinsletWoody Allen’s latest film, “Cafe Society,” hasn’t hit theaters yet, but the filmmaker is already moving on to his next project.

Sources tell Variety that Kate Winslet is in final negotiations to star in Allen’s next movie, which will shoot this fall.

Allen is writing, directing and producing the untitled pic, and like all his recent films, plot details are being heavily guarded.

As usual, Letty Aronson and Edward Walson will produce. The film hasn’t found a distributor yet, although Amazon seems to be a likely destination, given Allen’s recent relationship with the studio.

Though Winslet’s career has spanned more than two decades, the actress has never worked with the auteur prior to this pic.

Winslet is coming off her Oscar-nominated role in “Steve Jobs” and was also recently seen in Open Road’s crime drama “Triple Nine.” She just wrapped production on New Line’s “Collateral Beauty” opposite Will Smith and recently boarded the Fox drama “The Mountain Between Us,” co-starring Idris Elba.

She is repped by CAA and United Agents.

Allen’s “Cafe Society,” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, bowed at the Cannes Film Festival and opens in theaters on July 16.
