Best Places in the U.S. to Watch the Sunset

Best Places in the U.S. to Watch the SunsetHumans have long held a complex relationship with the sun. It's driven our evolutionary and cultural progression on manifold occasions, it's been the inspiration for art and song, and it's become the driving force in emerging industry. Every now and again, we find ourselves answering the call, looking to the sky during the hours before dusk to find the perfect spot to bid our star farewell. It's fortunate that in the U.S. we have such diverse and incredible landscapes that serve as a backdrop to this duty. In fact, there are so many wonderful spots to watch the sunset that it's impossible to pick favorites. Regardless, here are a few contenders you might want to consider.

Here are the best places in the U.S. to watch the sunset:

1. Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is among the world's most breathtaking landmarks. It's no wonder that watching the sunset above the massive chasm carved by the winding Colorado river would be any less spectacular. And, standing in the right spot, you can watch the light give way as the sun dips down into the canyon, and watch it disappear into the earth as if were swallowed up by the river.

2. Bar Harbor, Maine

A popular tourist destination on the island of Mount Desert, the town of Bar Harbor is a popular tourist spot and former summer home for many among the super wealthy. You can stand practically anywhere on the island and get a great view, but peering from Bar Harbor into Frenchman Bay will most certainly give you a tremendous view of the setting sun. For an even better view, consider taking a sunset whale watching tour and find yourself in the midst of a panorama like you've never seen before.

3. Orcas Island, Washington

Another island on the list that also has whaling tours and a breathtaking sunset. Named for a Mexican Viceroy who sent an expedition into the Pacific Northwest, Orcas Island is located off the northwest coast of Washington state in the San Juan Islands. You can watch the sun go down over the awkwardly named Massacre Bay from the Howe Art Sculpture Park and Gallery or Moran State Park.

4. Mount Haleakala, Hawaii

Mount Haleakala is a massive volcano that makes up over three quarters of the Hawaiian island of Maui. There's a 30,000-acre national park here for visitors to wander through and take in the scenery. But Mount Haleakala is also known for its mesmerizing sunsets. Here, you can watch the sun disappear beneath the mist-soaked volcanic landscape, taking in the beauty of the surrounding natural world.

5. Empire State Building, New York, NY

The sun never sets on the American Empire, but it does set in New York, the financial, artistic and trade capital of the U.S. From the lofty heights atop the building that's almost synonymous with the city itself, you can watch the sun beat down over the steel and stone landscape that modernity has carved for us.

Kate Winslet to Star in Woody Allen’s Next Film

Kate WinsletWoody Allen’s latest film, “Cafe Society,” hasn’t hit theaters yet, but the filmmaker is already moving on to his next project.

Sources tell Variety that Kate Winslet is in final negotiations to star in Allen’s next movie, which will shoot this fall.

Allen is writing, directing and producing the untitled pic, and like all his recent films, plot details are being heavily guarded.

As usual, Letty Aronson and Edward Walson will produce. The film hasn’t found a distributor yet, although Amazon seems to be a likely destination, given Allen’s recent relationship with the studio.

Though Winslet’s career has spanned more than two decades, the actress has never worked with the auteur prior to this pic.

Winslet is coming off her Oscar-nominated role in “Steve Jobs” and was also recently seen in Open Road’s crime drama “Triple Nine.” She just wrapped production on New Line’s “Collateral Beauty” opposite Will Smith and recently boarded the Fox drama “The Mountain Between Us,” co-starring Idris Elba.

She is repped by CAA and United Agents.

Allen’s “Cafe Society,” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, bowed at the Cannes Film Festival and opens in theaters on July 16.

Dare to visit the world's largest ice cave that never melts

Cueva HieloThe majestic cave located in Ningwu north of China, has 85 meters deep and 2, 3000 meters above sea level. So far this is the largest ice cave it has been found in the territory of China.

Scientists believe that the cave was formed about 3 million years ago during the ice age. The cave itself is truly magical, with a play of light and large ice cubes around. But its beauty is not the only thing special about it. The most striking fact is that the cave never melts even in summer, when temperatures can reach 17 degrees Celsius.

Experts claim that this effect is achieved by the specific form of the cave, which has a trap that brings fresh air through a narrow corridor and does not allow heat to enter.

Four Packing tips every traveler should know

Packing TipsPacking is pivotal. Forget an essential item and you're left disappointed and scrambling to find the nearest store in your destination. Pack too much and you end up disorganized, burdened with heavy bags, and hemorrhaging money to pay for pricey airline baggage fees. So we thought it best to revisit the most basic—and most useful—packing rules. Here are 10 fundamental packing strategies that every traveler should learn.

1. Roll, don't fold.

Many travel experts—including backpackers, who must stuff months' worth of clothing into a pack the size of a box of wine—agree that rolling is superior to folding. Tightly rolled clothes take up less space than folded ones. Plus, they're less prone to getting deep wrinkles from fold creases.

2. Make a packing list

When it comes to packing, procrastinators fall short. Start your packing process days or even weeks ahead of your departure date; this gives you time to craft a complete list, plus purchase any additional items you might need for your vacation. Creating a packing list is a fail-safe way to ensure that you never, ever forget to bring something important.

3. Know your airline's baggage-fee policy

Figuring out the airlines' tricky and befuddling baggage-fee policies is key to any budget-minded packing strategy. While most airlines permit travelers to check at least one bag on international flights, the majority of U.S. carriers charge big bucks for bags checked on domestic flights. Spirit Airlines—that notoriously customer-unfriendly discounter—even charges as much as $100 for carry-on bags.

Before you begin packing, take a peek at your airline's website and read its baggage policy. This is something you might even want to do prior to buying your plane ticket, especially if you're set on bringing a checked bag or two. Consider flying on Southwest or JetBlue, both of which permit at least one free checked bag on domestic flights.

4. Follow the 3-1-1 rule

What happens if you don't follow the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) 3-1-1 rule for carry-on luggage? Attempt to bring a large bottle of shampoo or a full-size gel deodorant through the security line and the TSA will likely confiscate your stuff, holding you up in line in the process. So get familiar with the agency's rules: All liquids brought onto planes must be in 3.4-ounce bottles or smaller and inside a single, clear, quart-size zip-top bag.

It also helps to know which items are, according to the TSA, considered liquids or gels and thereby subject to the 3-1-1 rule. This isn't as simple as it sounds. Foods such as peanut butter, pudding, mashed potatoes, and icing are classified as gels. Mascara, lip gloss, and aerosol items are also classified as liquids or gels. But keep in mind that liquid prescription medication is exempt.

There are 13 Via Ferrata routes, which combine trekking and rock climbing, and for an unforgettable experience, you can even scramble these routes at night!
